About Last Night: Modern Luxury Palm Beach + Christofle
I was so honored when Modern Luxury Palm Beach asked me to host their recent Spring Soiree at Christofle. This was a tough one…drink champagne with fabulous people at a stunningly beautiful shop on Worth Avenue? On behalf of one of my favorite local magazines? Yes, please!

I went to Christofle a week before the event and noticed that they had some beautiful products that were designed by Karl Lagerfeld. What a fitting tribute to this legend! I decided to use the X Mood Lagerfeld Egg as a stunning centerpiece and used a fresh palette for the table scape I created. The pops of pink and lavender really compliment the shining silver and crystal Christofle pieces.

The New Palm Beach: Favorite Benjamin Moore Colors for 2019
I love Benjamin Moore paint, and I use it in all of my homes! I sat down recently with Benjamin Moore to talk about my favorite color picks for 2019. And my favorite colors are…..(drumroll, please!)
Super White
Cloud White
Cliffside Gray
Smoke Embers
Honey Hut
Rose Bisque
Crisp Romaine
Newburg Green
Raccoon Fur
Trout Gray
In what ways would you use these hues? For example, are there specific colors that work best in a certain room or are there certain pairings that create subtle effects or bold statements?
In my designs, I usually choose soft neutrals as a base and add snaps of color. Happy snaps are discovered in pillows or accessories…but can also be exposed with paint (I just completed a home where all the interior doors are a contrasting color). I love the spectacle of a dramatic hue like Benjamin Moore’s Racoon Fur or Crisp Romaine as an accent on a cabinet, wall or ceiling. Recently I designed a master bedroom with a geo pattern, milled wall in the smoldering Trout Gray…it made a huge statement! (see below).
When it comes to neutrals, I enjoy the smoky sophistication of grays. A few of my Benjamin Moore favorites are Cliffside Gray, Coventry Gray and Ice Formations. I love how, depending on the natural light and finish selections, grays can look warm or cool…and mood is everything in a home.
In the photo below, the light gray shiplap (BM Cliffside Gray) beautifully tops the platinum taupe glazed cabinetry and the crisp white trim (BM Chantilly Lace). The soft sea upholstered barstools set the coastal tone.
How can homeowners use color to evoke the feelings of Palm Beach?
When one hears the phrase “Palm Beach” I think it conjures certain images: lush, colorful tropical foliage and florals, the island itself laden with history and beautiful architecture, not to mention an opulent lifestyle and impeccable service.
My own personal design style offers a fresh take on this iconic subculture. I call it The New Palm Beach™. This style blends classic elements with modern touches, a swank vacationing energy, and a luxurious look that’s livable.
Color-wise, I look to the elements of the beautiful outdoors. There is so much to work with in Palm Beach…the beautiful blues of the ocean, the soft warm sand, and the rich hues of the lush greenery and blossoms that surround us. My version of Palm Beach décor is subtle, organic and fresh. It’s not your grandmother’s Palm Beach anymore!
I still love the vibrant shades of “classic” Palm Beach, but I use them as a pop to not overwhelm the senses. One of my favorite design touches is an unexpected happy snap of hot pink, in a beautiful fabric on a pillow. To me, pink is very Palm Beach. After all, pink is the new black! Certain tones of pink make it a neutral such as the blush hues in Benjamin Moore’s Rose Bisque and Honey Hut. But I do love a hot or bright tone of pink as an accent.
In the photo above, I used beautiful fabrics on the throw pillows on a soft neutral sofa to bring this room to life. I love the crisp white Chantilly Lace Benjamin Moore paint on the ceiling beams. It really sets the stage for the furniture and accessories. I think this photo really illustrates my design point of view and is a great example of how The New Palm Beach™ style could be implemented anywhere.
What are some simple ways to bring the Palm Beach experience into a home, no matter its location?
Great question! I think about this a lot – I’m currently developing some exciting new product that will be usable to homeowners everywhere. The great thing about The New Palm Beach™ is that this is a style that can be implemented anywhere.
One of the things that is wonderful about living in South Florida is you always feel like you’re on vacation. I often marvel at how lucky I am to gaze up at the crisp, lush palms during my morning workouts, and the stunning views of the ocean and the lighthouse as I head to meetings with clients. In the photo below I used Newburg Green for a master bathroom I designed for Kips Bay Decorator Show House. It was a bold choice, but it really made an impact! The Show House was a unique situation where I got to meet and talk with hundreds of people viewing my work. Many people asked what color was on the walls and wrote it down!

I love to travel, and my husband and I are what you might call hotel snobs—it’s in the name of professional research, after all! We adore a great hotel with fabulous design, service and amazing food. I’m a Northeastern girl… weathering the cold all my life in Connecticut and New York City made me want to channel that vacationing spirit and infuse that energy into all my work. I can imagine a Chicago homeowner, enduring a difficult trudge through lake effect winter winds, escaping to a home designed with a luxurious vacationing spirit. It’s good for the soul! And my go-to Benjamin Moore color palette for The New Palm Beach™ style is just the way to start.
When designing a master bedroom like the one below, I think about what people love about staying at hotels. Think soft, comfortable fabrics, uncluttered nightstands, a beautiful chair to lounge with a book or your morning coffee, and the most luxurious linens on your bed that you can afford.
I think that bringing coastal hints into your home is food for the spirit, wherever you live. Natural, organic and fresh components create a pleasing, calm aesthetic for home décor and deliver that relaxed vacation feel in spades. It’s not about seashells and kitschy details, it’s a vibe that we create through color and finishes.
A beautiful piece of driftwood on a crisp white shelf, a weathered farmhouse door or table, soft linens on the sofas or a dash of tropical color – all of these things make me think of the island life we have come to adore.
Any other general tips or comments on designing with color that you might want to share, please do!
- My rule of thumb, set the tone with a soft neutral palette and add happy snaps of tropical color.
- When choosing a chic, sophisticated neutral base … gray or blush will make for a stylish retreat.
- Smoky black and sexy forest green will be big in 2019. If it pushes your uncomfortable design buttons, start small with a twang in accessories and artwork.
- For serious drama queens, go for a slick powder bath, kitchen cabinets or painted millwork in Benjamin Moore’s Raccoon Fur in a high gloss finish.
- White is light and bright! Every white has its own personality. My go-tos are Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace, Cloud White and Super White.
Kips Bay Show House Reveal
I am so excited to reveal the master bath and closet I designed for the 2019 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach! This project was a labor of love for a great cause, as proceeds will benefit The Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club and The Boys and Girls Club of Palm Beach County. It was an ambitious project with a tight timeframe, but I am so happy with the results!
The room was inspired by the concept of celebration and starting a fun night early, while getting ready to go out. My husband and I have date night every Friday and we love to put on music and have a cocktail in our bathroom to set the mood of the evening. I named my space at Kips Bay Decorator Show House “Le Bubble Lounj”.

Interior Design by Krista Watterworth Alterman, Photo by Jessica Glynn
This incredible slab of book matched marble by Ceramic Matrix drove the palette for the space. The “bubble” chandelier was provided by one of my favorite lighting sources, Capitol Lighting. Capitol has stores throughout South Florida and New York, but they also have an online store where their products are available nationally. They carry many of my favorite upscale brands.
The Kohler sok tub is an infinity tub with a continuous flow of water cascading over the sides of the basin, The sok bath offers whole-body immersion as chromatherapy surrounds you with calming colored lights. Effervescence ports release thousands of tiny champagne-like bubbles, creating a luxurious sensory experience for two. I love everything about this tub!

Interior Design by Krista Watterworth Alterman, Photo by Jessica Glynn
The oversized Kohler shower has a large rain shower panel, speaker panels and body jets. Everything is controlled digitally. There is a remote and you can program your phone to play your music in the shower!
We had an incredible contractor for this project. NNI Construction kept everything running smoothly despite the incredibly tight timeframe and a few hurdles along the way. I give them my highest recommendation if you are looking for a contractor! All of the glass and mirrors in the space were provided by another local gem, Giant Glass and Mirror. The framing and marble fabrication was done by Tostes Cabinets.

The Veil Toilet by Kohler is the best loo out there! With its flowing and immaculately balanced curves, the Veil one-piece toilet with integrated cleansing functionality epitomizes minimalist and ergonomic design. It provides a suite of features finely tuned to offer optimum hygiene and ultimate individual comfort, from personal cleansing to an LED nightlight to hands-free opening and closing. All of the features are easy to control on a touchscreen LCD remote control.

I chose a high gloss Benjamin Moore paint for the walls and it really makes a statment! The color is Benjamin Moore Newburg Green. The fabulous sconces are by Capitol Lighting. The glass sinks and vanities are by Kohler, and the stunning vanity stool with custom fabric is by Fabricut. I am in love with these Mersey Quartz counters by Cambria.

I must mention the amazing accessories that provided the final touches to the space. The luxurious linens and robes were provided by Yves DeLorme and Pioneer Linens. The sleek vanity sets are from Labrazel.

I wanted the closet to feel like a lounge and I found the perfect partner to create custom cabinetry. Closets by Montecristo created my vision perfectly! They used my sketches to create this stunning, upscale dressing room. The chandelier in the room is by Capitol Lighting, and the fabulous Marielle bench is by Fabricut, with custom fabric by S. Harris.

This marble tile flooring by Ceramic Matrix really makes a statement! I love the brass and black on the crisp white background.
Every master bath and dressing suite needs a bar! The perfect spot for my husband to mix a cocktail and chat with me while I am taking a bubble bath.
The Kips Bay Show House is open for viewing through February 20. Click here to purchase tickets.

Using Millwork In Home Design
This recent project has tons of custom wall detail and millwork. I love how it turned out! It was such a pleasure to work with NNI Construction on this home. They were able to take my sketches and seamlessly make all of my designs come to life. Enjoy this video about using millwork in your home design.

High Point Market 2018
The KRISTA + HOME team decided to make the trip to High Point, North Carolina this year for the Fall High Point Market. I am so glad we went! The trip filled me with inspiration and I loved meeting so many great vendors and designers in the business.
I have to give a shoutout to S. Harris, one of my new favorite fabric companies! I had a chance to meet with Jodi Finer, their creative director. I love her work! They are debuting a bunch of new lines that I will definitely be using in upcoming designs.

I love networking with fellow designers and these women are amazing! They are Pulp Design Studios and they have a new line of fabrics with S. Harris that is to die for.

I met Vern Yip years ago, during my HGTV days. So great to see him!

I love my team! This trip was a great bonding experience for us. We work hard and play hard!
It was an amazing trip, and I can’t wait to go next year!

2018 ASID Design Excellence Crystal Awards
I am so honored to have won two 2018 American Society of Interior Design (ASID) Excellence Crystal Awards! It was a wonderful evening of celebrating with my team and industry peers at The Venue in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The gala featured a sit-down dinner and wonderful entertainment from a Joan Rivers impersonator (complete with red carpet “What are you wearing” fun). Thank you to the South Chapter American Society of Interior Designers for my award and for a wonderful evening!
We won first place in the Traditional Design Category (over 3000 sqft) for this Hollywood Regency style home that I designed in Parkland, Florida. I’ve spoken before on this blog about how this home really pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged me. That definitely makes the recognition extra rewarding!
We won Honorable Mention in Contemporary Design for this project that is located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. This home was featured in Architectural Digest. I love these clients and we are actually in the process of designing a second home for them in Miami.
Backsplash Vibes
One of the most important elements of your kitchen or bathroom design is your backsplash! On a budget? Simply swapping out your backsplash can make all the difference in the look and feel of your space.
The backsplash can be a major focal part of your kitchen or bathroom design. You can really make a statement with color, design and the way the tile is laid. You could also choose something neutral to really highlight and support the counters.
Backsplash adds a nice decorative element and there are many materials to choose from. You want to think about functionality here, something easy to maintain. I love tile, and there are so many beautiful options. Step away from the subway tile and try something new!
One of my favorite tile designers is Ann Sacks. I was so honored when she requested to use some of my photos in her recent product catalog. Below is the kitchen they featured. I love how this turned out! It is a vacation condo in Jupiter, Florida that I designed for some cool Manhattanites.
This client loves all things aqua, so we found this beautiful backsplash with subtle aqua elements. The pops of black on the light fixtures and island paint give it a modern vibe..
I adore this backsplash install of SPIN tile from my own line that I designed in collaboration with TileBar. It is called EIGHTY by Krista and was inspired by the 1980’s.
The black and white backsplash is really the star of this kitchen, don’t you think? It makes a big statement.
Here is an example of how tile can completely transform a bathroom. I am so glad these clients trusted me to take a bit of a risk here with a bold look. They loved the results!
How To Style Your Dining Room
While the kitchen is definitely the heart and soul of our home, I have a soft spot for the dining room. I love using the room for family dinners, adult dinner parties, game nights, holidays and really any chance to celebrate a special moment! Your dining room should be an inviting space to gather and share a meal.
Dining rooms come in all shapes and sizes, so it is important to first consider the shape of the room and what type of table you can fit. I always say go as big as you possibly can without being too crowded. Make sure there is plenty of space to move the chairs and walk around the table comfortably.
For seating, I always think about comfort. There is nothing worse than sitting down for a long meal in an uncomfortable chair! Outdoor fabrics are functional here. They are stain resistant and there are so many beautiful varieties available now.
Light is an important factor is the dining room. I like to use a layering effect when I think about lighting…utilizing the natural light from a window, a beautiful chandelier, sconces or lamps and candlelight, of course! The shape and size of your light fixture is key. If its a large space, I like a big and bold chandelier. The shape of your fixture should compliment the table as well.
Accessories are the finishing touches, and can make or break the space. I always love something living and organic…fresh flowers in a beautiful vase or even green palms, freshly cut from your yard add a nice pop of color.
When setting the table for a special meal, use a variety of colors, texture and shapes to add visual interest. Make sure your candles or floral arrangements are low enough for your guests to make eye contact with the group.
Decorating With Orange
Orange is a tricky color to work with in home design. I can’t say it is one of my favorites, but when it is done right it really makes a statement! I do love the liveliness and positivity of orange. It can be a pleasing accent if you are careful and use a light touch.
Here are a few tips for decorating with orange:
- Pair with white. Orange and white is a great combination. I like a crisp, pure white with my orange! Other neutrals like cream and gray also work well.
- Be careful with the shade or orange. Whether you choose mandarin, pumpkin or spice, you will want to stay closely in that color family with your accents.
- Think about where you want to place your orange accents. A pillow, rug, or piece of art works well. Even small touches like an orange vase will add some punch.
- Balance is important. If you are going to go there with orange, make sure there is more than one orange thing in the room. But be careful, don’t overdo!
Designing The New Palm Beach
I’m excited to launch our tagline “Designing The New Palm Beach”. Palm Beach conjures certain images… the bright colors and patterns of Lily Pulitzer, and the island itself laden with history and beautiful architecture, not to mention an opulent lifestyle and impeccable service.
The New Palm Beach offers a fresh take on this iconic subculture. We are introducing a new design style that can be implemented anywhere. This style blends classic elements with modern touches; a soft, neutral palette with pops of bright color; and a luxurious look that’s livable. My version of coastal décor is subtle, organic and fresh. In other words, its not your grandmother’s Palm Beach anymore!
At Krista + Home we deliver this style with a passion for serving our clients to the very last detail, from beginning to end – maintaining this true Palm Beach tradition.
My family and I recently had a little staycation at The Breakers. Traveling always gives me inspiration, and I realized that the historic hotel is a perfect example of The New Palm Beach. While the stunning architecture and old school details are still intact, the hotel has been perfectly refreshed to appeal to today’s guests. The rooms are comfortable with fresh modern touches and a bit of whimsy. Several of the fine dining establishments remain, and they have added the fun and hip HMF. It feels current and appealing. It’s a mix of old and new that really works well.
I hope you agree our new tagline captures our design style. Reach out to us via Facebook, Insta, Twitter – whatever your platform – and let us know what you think. We’d love to hear from you!
What It’s Like To Work With An Interior Designer
I thought it would be fun to share a little of our process of working with clients. Many people do not really understand everything that happens when you work with an interior design firm. Here are some common questions and solutions so you can see what happens behind the scenes at Krista + Home.
Why do I need a designer when I can buy furniture myself?
Your home should look amazing and be a reflection of your personality and style, and function in a way that works with how you live your life. It might sound impossible, and that’s because incredible interior design does not happen by chance. Great spaces are carefully explored, planned, and curated by professionals. A home renovation is a big life event, and our team carefully manages the entire process to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Many of our clients love that all of the furniture is stored in our facility and delivered to your home at the same time, so you get a big “reveal” on install day.
What is the designer’s role?
Our dedicated team at Krista + Home will handle all of the design related elements of your project. These elements include color palette, selection of furnishings, drapery, flooring, surfaces, counters, tile, accessories, artwork, wall treatments, lighting and cabinetry.
Renovation or New Build
We do both. Krista + Home works closely with architects and builders to develop your personalized plan. From cabinet pulls to moving walls, we consult on build-related design selections with your architect and contractor.
Purchasing
The Krista + Home team will purchase and manage all aspects of shipping and delivery of all merchandise on your behalf.
How Do I Get Started?
The first step is to set up an introductory call so we can learn about the specifics of your project and you can learn more about us. Call us at 561.530.3983 to get started.
Light It Up! Statement Lighting Fixtures For Your Home
I love choosing light fixtures for my clients! Lighting is everything. The right fixture acts almost as a piece of art in the space and can really be a standout design element. The photos below are from a home I designed in Parkland, Florida for an amazing young family. The fixtures we chose for each room make a huge statement and define each space.
The room below is a casually elegant breakfast room with an amazing view. For this space I chose a drum pendant by Rejuvenation. I love the linen shade, and the dark finish adds visual interest to the room.
In this glamorous master bathroom, we chose a trio of delicate and vintage looking chandeliers. They pair perfectly with the wallpaper!
The fixture below is a scallop hanging shade from Visual Comfort. I love the simplicity and crisp white of the piece.
For the kitchen, we chose oversized lantern fixtures by Visual Comfort. I love how the black finish picks up some of the darker elements in the room.
Sconces are a great lighting choice in unexpected places, like the nightstand in the master bedroom! A perfect choice for late night reading and soft mood lighting in your bedroom. Below I chose crystal sconces by Cordesign Lighting.
