How To Choose Stools For Your Kitchen

Counter stools are a staple in most kitchens these days. Stools are a practical solution to create extra seating in your kitchen, and are great for casual dining at a kitchen counter or island. There are many options for choosing the right stools for your space.

Height

First, measure the height of your counters. Chair stool heights are usually 18″ from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 28″-30″ in height. Counter Stool heights are usually 24″-26″ inches from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 36″-39″ in height.  Bar stool heights are generally 28″-30″ from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 40″-42″ in height.

Style

Will the stools be discreet or a key design element in your kitchen? If you entertain a lot and want to use the stools for extra seating, you may want something comfortable and worthy of lounging.

Backless can work well for a space that gets a lot of traffic, where you would want the stools to be easily tucked under a counter or island. Swivel, backless, casual, industrial, elegant…there are many styles to choose from!

Practicality

If you have kids, you may want to consider using an outdoor fabric like Sunbrella for upholstered barstools. I use these types of fabrics in many of the homes I design for families with young children.

1 Hotel South Beach

I was in South Beach recently for HousingWorks + Elle Decor’s “Design on a Dime” benefit and I had the pleasure of staying at 1 Hotel South Beach. I was so inspired by the design of the hotel. Created by Meyer Davis Studio, they used lots off reclaimed wood to represent a virtual forest preserved. Every detail has been carefully thought of: organic bed linens, hemp mattresses, and clothes hangers molded from recycled paper. So many beautiful design details everywhere you look!

We had a delicious poolside lunch at this vegan restaurant (the hotel has 4 restaurants total, including rooftop sushi!)

I love the heart details! They were everywhere…

Design on a Dime Miami 2018

As I mentioned in earlier posts, I was honored to be chosen as a designer for the annual “Design on a Dime” fundraiser, sponsored by Housing Works, Elle Decor, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and Benjamin Moore. Here is the reveal of my Rock Goddess Lounge vignette. It’s all about female empowerment…perfect for 2018: The Year of the Woman!

Special thanks to Currey & Company for donating the fabulous pink poodle lamp and Surya for donating the amazing rug.

House tour: Tequesta Waterfront Project

Tequesta is a sleepy beach town in South Florida with so much character! I was honored to design this home for an amazing family who is loving life on the waterfront. We helped them create their dream house by building a true chef’s kitchen for this family of cooks, beautiful outdoor areas to enjoy the Intra Coastal and a fresh, coastal vibe throughout the home from the flooring to the furnishings and accessories.  Enjoy the tour!

Miami Design District

I am so exited to be involved with the upcoming Design On A Dime benefit, sponsored by HousingWorks, Elle Decor, Benjamin Moore and Mitchell Gold Bob Williams. Proceeds from this event will help fund Housing Works’ AIDS-FREE USA 2025 campaign, a collaborative, community-based initiative working to end the AIDS epidemic in the US by 2025.

One of the parts of the event that I am super excited about is the location. The Miami Design District is amazing. Billed as “A creative neighborhood and shopping destination”, the district is dedicated to innovative fashion, design, art, architecture and dining. The venue for the event is the historic Moore Building. The unique building was built in 1921 as the furniture showroom space for Moore and Sons.

On permanent display in the atrium is the site-specific installation “Elastika,” created by Iraqi-born, London-based architect Zaha Hadid and commissioned by Dacra president Craig Robins. Together they wanted a design which compliments and at the same time contradicts the period in which the Moore Building was built.

How To Make A Beautiful Bed

I love designing bedrooms. And I always get asked about how to make beds. So I decided to make a video about it! Layering is key. Don’t use too many pillows. Less is more!

Enjoy the video and some photos of my favorite bedroom designs.

The theme I have chosen for my space is “Rock Star Goddess Dressing Room”. Enjoy a sneak peek of my designs and some inspirational photos.

The colors are rich and dramatic, yet feminine and playful. Somewhat bohemian to represent a life on the road.

What appeals to me about the rock goddess is her strength and courage. There is a certain freedom about being a rock n’ roll star and also a woman. Feminism at it’s best!

The pieces in the space are not only sexy and soft, but luxurious with a little bling. Colors and fabrics are rich in texture – this room will have all the items that a rock goddess requires. Stay tuned for more!

White Kitchens 101

Many people say the kitchen is the heart of a home. Its a place where families gather, where plans and dreams are made and guests are entertained! White kitchens are all the rage… and shaker cabinets are everyone’s first choice. Choosing your cabinets and backsplash is a very important step in kitchen design.

This kitchen below has clear glass cabinetry up top to break up all the white. The backsplash just about disappears, unless you look up close. It’s a three dimensional Ann Sacks tile in a similar white hue. A pop of orange in the classic Wishbone chair makes for a statement.

White is definitely in and I love white cabinets. But I encourage clients to add some color, as an entire white kitchen can be a bit of a snooze. Look at how well the bold black and white backsplash works in the kitchen below! It compliments the black counters perfectly. And we did a little switch on the island countertop and made that white quartzite.

This herringbone New Ravenna tile is a great monochromatic yet eye catching tile. It’s a mix of various finishes on marble.  Add variety by choosing a contrasting island finish. The sleek black that we chose for the island cabinets works well here.

A pretty yet simple detail in the glass cabinetry like this “x” pattern off sets the center “buffet” area in this kitchen. A simple bead board at the back of the inset up top  is a nice detail.

If you are set on going for all white, take a bit of a risk with the tile. Using unexpected shapes will add visual interest, and a darker grout allows for the backsplash to stand out. This is a more modern slab door with a china display case built in- for collectibles.

A curved island with shiplap to finish it off creates a coastal farmhouse vibe. The “x” feature keeps the flow open (it was a closed wall originally), and the neutral glass backsplash is a pretty yes simple look.

This client loved aqua. The subtle aqua tones in the glass elements of the backsplash, mixed with grays and whites of Carrara marble add a modern touch. The waterfall edge on the island is also more contemporary, with (of course) a black finish island to create a statement.

How To Style A Shelf

One of the things that I get asked about a lot is how to style a shelf in your home. Check out my video for some tips and tricks!

Interior Design Styles 101

There are many different styles for interior design and I love the process of meeting a clients and finding their style together. I frequently blend the styles, but it is important to have a clear understanding of each one. Here are some of the design styles that are popular right now.

Modern Farmhouse

Fresh spin on rustic. Think neutral color scheme, shiplap, industrial or modern lighting, barn doors and lots of re-purposing.

Bohemian

This style is adventurous and carefree. Lots of vibrant colors and  jeweled tones. It can be tribal inspired with use of moroccan or southwestern fabrics and accents.

Mid-Century Modern

With this look, use minimalist silhouettes, clean lines and iconic furniture. This look is highly versatile. I love the simplicity, functionality and use of natural shapes and objects.

Coastal

This style is very popular with my clients in the palm beaches. Think comfortable! I use light, airy fabrics, and usually a palette of whites, blues and aquas.

Hollywood Regency

This is a look that is definitely trendy right now. Think luxurious! Rich textures, contrasting colors, curved and low lying furniture. Strong patterns and bold colors like black are signatures here.

Transitional

This look blends traditional and modern styles. Some pieces may be classic and rooted in history, with clean and fresh furniture blended in.

DCOTA Spring Market

My team and I recently took a trip to Miami to visit the Design Center of the America’s. We went to their 2017 Spring Market, which is a place for all of the furniture and home decor vendors to showcase new products and trends.

Some of our favorite pieces were from the new Kravet Couture line.  While most think of Kravet as a fabric brand, this new line includes pillows, lighting and accessory collaborations. We are loving it.

We saw so many amazing pieces at the DCOTA Spring Market and came home filled with inspiration!
