Creating a Color Palette for Your Home

Interior Design by Krista+Home. Photographed by Eve Greendale.

Designing a home that feels balanced and inviting starts with establishing a cohesive color palette. Colors influence our emotions, set the tone for each room, and tie the entire house together.

Understand the Basics of Color Theory

Before diving into specific hues, it’s important to grasp the fundamentals of color theory. Familiarize yourself with the color wheel, which is divided into primary (red, blue, yellow), secondary (green, orange, purple), and tertiary colors. Understanding how these colors interact can help you choose complementary, analogous, or monochromatic schemes. Figure out how certain colors make you feel, and consider how you want to feel in your home.

Start with a Base Color

Choose a base color that will serve as the foundation for your palette. This is often a neutral shade such as white, beige, gray, or a subtle pastel. Your base color will dominate larger areas like walls, ceilings, and flooring, providing a backdrop that other colors can build upon.

Select Accent Colors

Pick one or two accent colors to bring vibrancy and personality to your home. These colors should complement your base color and can be used in smaller, strategic areas like trim, accent walls, furniture, or decorative items. For instance, if your base is a cool gray, you might choose a deep blue or rich green as an accent.

Incorporate a Pop of Color

Adding a pop of color or as we like to call it “Happy Snaps of Color” can create visual interest and break the monotony. This could be a bold hue that appears in artwork, throw pillows, or an accent chair. Ensure this color harmonizes with your base and accent colors but stands out enough to make a statement.

Balance Warm and Cool Tones

Mixing warm and cool tones can add depth and balance to your color scheme. Warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) can make a space feel cozy and inviting, while cool colors (blues, greens, purples) create a calm and refreshing ambiance. Combining these can create a dynamic yet harmonious environment.

Use Patterns and Textures Wisely

Incorporate patterns and textures to add dimension and interest to your color palette. Patterns can mix multiple colors from your scheme, helping tie everything together. Textures like wood, metal, fabric, and stone can introduce subtle color variations that enhance the overall aesthetic without overwhelming the primary palette.

Test Before You Commit

Always test your colors before fully committing. Paint swatches on your walls and observe them at different times of the day to see how they look under various lighting conditions. This step can save you from costly mistakes and ensure your chosen palette works well in your space.

Add Personal Touches

Ultimately, your color palette should reflect your personal style and taste. Incorporate colors that you love and that make you feel at home. Personal touches like family heirlooms, artwork, and other decor can be integrated into your color scheme to make your home uniquely yours.

Fireplace Design: A Focal Point for Warmth and Style

Many people believe that fireplaces are only suitable for cold climates. However, a fireplace can add physical warmth, aesthetic depth, and a feeling of comfort to any space. Here are a few steps to think about while creating the perfect fireplace setting.

Interior Design by Krista + Home. Photography by Jessica Glynn.

FIGURE OUT YOUR VIBE

Are you all about that classic holiday fireplace feel, or do you prefer sleek and modern? This is important when both building AND styling your fireplace. Fireplaces are so much more than keeping you warm! Consider how you'll use the space—will it be a cozy reading nook, a movie night hotspot, a moody dinner ambiance, or a gathering spot for game nights? Tailor your design to fit your lifestyle and make the most of your fireplace.

FUNCTION + STYLE

When choosing your fireplace, think about both form and function. Look for models that match the aesthetic you're looking for, and also give the right amount of heat you need. Don't forget about the space around your fireplace; think about the mantel and the hearth. How much space do you want to add stylistic decor? Fireplace material can be fun to select. Brick is always a classic- think about painting it for an update! You can also go for a fun tile to add some art to your space. But remember, make sure the material can withstand the heat of your fire. A fireplace is a great focal point in any room, make sure you make it pop!

STYLING

Creating balance around your fireplace is the most important, yet also the most overlooked part of design. Arrange your furniture so it centers around the fireplace, add accessories to the mantel and the hearth, and think of items in odd numbers when adding accessories. Candles, lamps, books, plants, frames, and small decorative items are always a good way to cozy up the star of the show. A TV, a piece of art, or a mirror are always great options to place above the fireplace if you have space to fill.  These items are the "cherries on top" of the coolest part of your space. Make it personal, make it fun!

Think "Balance + Personality"

Selecting Furniture for Optimum Comfort and Style

When purchasing furniture most people think of two things: Style and Function. Unfortunately, they often think about one and neglect the other.

Furniture is an expression of your style, personality, and lifestyle. Whether you're furnishing a new home, refreshing your space, or simply looking for that perfect piece to complete the look, choosing the right furniture is essential to achieving your desired aesthetic and creating a comfortable and livable space.

Interior Design by Krista + Home. Photography by Eve Greendale.

Function

While style is important, functionality should come first. Do you need a desk for a home office? Before choosing what looks nice, consider the electronics you need, storage for office supplies, space for writing, etc. Be honest with yourself, if you’re someone with a lot of papers, pens, and junk then a writer's desk with limited storage might not be the right fit. Consider how you use each space in your home and choose furniture that meets your specific needs. Imagine buying a beautiful couch only to realize that when you come home after a long day at work it’s uncomfortable, scratchy, or too small to relax on.

Interior Design by Krista + Home. Photography by Jessica Glynn.

Size

One of the most common mistakes in furniture selection is overlooking the importance of scale and proportion. Before making a purchase, measure your space carefully and consider the size of the room, doorways, and any obstacles that may affect furniture placement. If you have limited space, look for multifunctional furniture pieces like storage ottomans or extendable dining tables that maximize space without sacrificing style. Not only do you need to make sure the couch is a good size for your living room but, did you purchase a bed? Make sure your nightstands are the right height. Make sure your barstool's arms fit nicely underneath the counter. Choose furniture that is the correct scale and goes with your other pieces in the room.

Style

Style is the fun part. After you have decided what you need from your new piece of furniture, deciding on the style will be fun. Look at trends in furniture, take style quizzes online, and figure out if you gravitate towards traditional, mid-century, vintage, etc. This will help you narrow down your search. Don't settle, there is enough furniture out there to be both functional and stylish.

Interior Design by Krista + Home. Photography by Eve Greendale.

Fabric

Investing in quality furniture is essential to creating a functional and stylish home. Look for well-crafted pieces made from durable materials like solid wood, hardwood frames, and high-quality upholstery fabrics. We love using outdoor fabrics inside. They are durable and designers are increasingly creating softer fabrics that you would never know are for the outside. Love a certain fancy white fabric but have a small child - or an adult who acts like one - who might spill? Something that is easily cleaned or can hide small stains may be a smarter option.

Interior Design by Krista + Home. Photography by Eve Greendale.

Test it Out

Comfort is key when selecting furniture. Test out furniture pieces in person whenever possible. Sit on sofas and chairs, test the drawers in your dresser, rest your feet on the ottoman, and make sure they meet your expectations. Pay attention to details like cushion firmness, seat depth, and ease of use to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Happy Shopping!

Choosing the Right Lighting for Every Room in Your Home

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating ambiance in your home. Whether you’re designing a cozy reading nook, a bright kitchen, or a tranquil bedroom, the right lighting can enhance every corner of your living space.

Before choosing your lighting, you need to understand the basics;

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photographed by Eve Greendale.

Types of Lighting:

  • Ambient lighting provides overall illumination to a room, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
  • Task lighting is focused illumination for specific activities, such as reading, cooking, or working.
  • Accent lighting adds visual interest and highlights architectural features or decor elements.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photographed by Eve Greendale.

Room Needs:

  • Living Room: A combination of ambient and accent lighting creates a welcoming atmosphere for entertaining guests or relaxing with family. Floor lamps, table lamps, and wall-mounted fixtures can all contribute to the overall ambiance.
  • Kitchen: Task lighting is paramount in the kitchen, where activities such as food preparation require adequate illumination. Under-cabinet lights, pendant lights above the island or sink, and recessed lighting can ensure a well-lit workspace.
  • Bedroom: Soft, ambient lighting promotes relaxation in the bedroom. Bedside table lamps or wall-mounted sconces with dimmer switches offer versatility, allowing you to adjust the light levels according to your mood.
  • Home Office: Task lighting is essential for productivity in a home office. A desk lamp with adjustable brightness and directionality helps reduce eye strain during work hours.

Choosing the right lighting for your home is both an art and a science. Not only does your lighting need to be functional, but it is an art piece as well. By understanding the basics of lighting design, the unique needs of each room, and selecting fixtures that enhance both form and function, you can create a beautifully illuminated space that’s both inviting and functional for you and your family.

By immersing prospective buyers in an environment that speaks to their aspirations and desires, a property can forge an emotional connection that transcends mere interest.

From Drab to Fab: Transforming Spaces with Furniture and Paint (No Reno Required)

You know your home needs a revamp, but you don’t want to deal with the hassle or expenses of a full renovation? Does your space feel tired, outdated, or uninspiring? It’s time to shake things up and breathe new life into your surroundings without embarking on a full-scale renovation. With a few strategic updates in furniture and a fresh coat of paint, you can transform your space from drab to fab in no time.

  1. Revamp with Paint:

Paint has the transformative power to completely alter the mood and aesthetic of a room. Whether you opt for a bold accent wall or a fresh coat of neutral tones, painting is one of the most cost-effective ways to rejuvenate your space. Experiment with different colors and finishes to find the perfect combination that reflects your personality and style.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider adding decorative touches like wallpaper or a mural to make a statement. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box – the possibilities are endless when it comes to using paint as a creative tool to revitalize your home.

  1.  Furnish with Impact:

Focus on upgrading key furniture pieces that have a significant impact on the overall look and feel of your space. Invest in a quality dining table and chairs for memorable gatherings, upgrade your sofa for enhanced comfort and style, or splurge on a luxurious bed frame to create a serene bedroom retreat.

Add depth and dimension to your space by incorporating furniture with varied textures and materials. Mix soft fabrics like velvet and linen with sleek metals, natural woods, and tactile accents such as rattan or leather to create visual interest and warmth.

Choosing neutrals for your furniture can help the longevity of the design in your space.

3. Accessorize with Personality:

Inject personality and flair into your space with curated accessories that reflect your interests and passions. From artwork and textiles to plants and decorative objects, accessories are the finishing touches that tie the room together and elevate its aesthetic appeal.

Experiment with layering and styling to create visual interest and depth. Mix and match different textures, colors, and scales to strike the perfect balance between form and function. This is the easiest way to update your home and make changes throughout the seasons.

Transforming your space from drab to fab doesn’t have to involve a costly and time-consuming renovation. By using the power of paint and strategic furniture updates, you can breathe new life into your home and create a personalized sanctuary that reflects your unique style and personality. Unsure of where to start, let us help you find your style and transform your space into a room you’re proud of!

The Power of Color: Using Bold Hues in Unexpected Ways

In the world of interior design, color holds an unparalleled power. It can evoke emotions, set the tone of a space, and breathe life into the mundane. At KRISTA + HOME, we understand the transformative potential of color, and we believe in harnessing its energy to create truly special interiors. Our signature “New Palm Beach” style revolves around the juxtaposition of neutrals with vibrant pops of color, allowing us to craft spaces that are both elegant and welcoming.

Interiors by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Eve Greendale

Neutrals serve as the foundation of our design ethos, providing a timeless backdrop that allows our bold color choices to shine. From serene whites to sophisticated grays, neutrals create a sense of balance and harmony within a room, allowing the eye to focus on the carefully curated accents that adorn the space. But it’s the unexpected bursts of color that truly elevate our designs from ordinary to extraordinary.

Interiors by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Jessica Glynn

Imagine walking into a living room bathed in soft creams and taupe, with plush furnishings and crisp, clean lines. Suddenly, your gaze is drawn to a pair of striking fuchsia armchairs nestled in the corner, their vibrant hue injecting a sense of playfulness and whimsy into the space. This is the power of color – it has the ability to captivate, surprise, and delight in equal measure.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME, photo by Jessica Glynn

One of our pro tips when incorporating bold hues into a room is the importance of repetition. If you introduce a bold color like pink through a throw pillow or an accent piece, it should be echoed elsewhere in the room to create visual cohesion and harmony. This could take the form of a complementary accessory, such as a coffee table book or a decorative vase, or it could be subtly woven into the room’s decor through wallpaper or a rug. By repeating the bold color throughout the space, you create a sense of rhythm and unity that ties the room together seamlessly.

Interiors by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Jessica Glynn

But our approach to color goes beyond mere aesthetics – it’s about creating spaces that reflect the personality and lifestyle of our clients. Whether it’s a vibrant teal accent wall in a bohemian-inspired bedroom or a sleek crimson backsplash in a modern kitchen, we believe in pushing the boundaries of conventional design to create spaces that are as unique and individual as the people who inhabit them.

Interiors by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Jerrica Catania

The power of color cannot be underestimated when it comes to interior design. By using bold hues in unexpected ways, we can transform ordinary rooms into extraordinary spaces that inspire, invigorate, and enchant. At KRISTA + HOME, we embrace the magic of color, infusing our designs with personality, vibrancy, and style. Why settle for ordinary when you can live in full color?

Luxury Kitchens: Balancing Functionality and Elegance

In the world of interior design, kitchens hold a special place. They are not just spaces for cooking but also hubs of socialization and creativity. As such, when it comes to luxury kitchens, the challenge lies in striking the perfect balance between functionality and elegance.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Jessica Glynn

Functionality forms the backbone of any kitchen. After all, it’s where culinary magic happens. From meal preparations to hosting gatherings, a functional kitchen streamlines tasks and enhances efficiency. However, functionality doesn’t mean sacrificing style. In luxury kitchens, functionality is seamlessly integrated with sophisticated design elements.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Eve Greendale

One key aspect of functional luxury kitchens is thoughtful layout and organization. Every inch of space is utilized efficiently, ensuring easy access to tools and ingredients while cooking. High-end appliances are strategically placed for optimal workflow, with consideration given to ergonomic principles. Ample storage solutions, such as custom cabinets and pantry systems, keep clutter at bay, promoting a clean and organized environment.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Eve Greendale

But functionality alone does not define luxury kitchens. Elegance plays an equally important role in elevating the space to a realm of sophistication and refinement. From luxurious materials to exquisite finishes, every detail is carefully curated to exude opulence and style.

When it comes to materials, natural stone countertops like marble or granite are often favored for their timeless beauty and durability. High-quality cabinetry crafted from premium woods adds warmth and richness to the space. Fine hardware and fixtures, such as polished chrome or brushed brass accents, lend a touch of glamour to the kitchen.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Jessica Glynn.

Lighting also plays a crucial role in enhancing the elegance of luxury kitchens. A well-designed lighting scheme not only illuminates the space but also creates ambiance and drama. Statement chandeliers or pendant lights serve as focal points, while under-cabinet lighting and recessed fixtures provide task lighting where needed.

Color palette choices are another important consideration in luxury kitchen design. Neutral tones like white, cream, and gray are popular for their ability to create a sense of airiness and sophistication. Accents of bold colors or metallic finishes can be introduced through accessories or decorative elements to add visual interest and depth.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Eve Greendale

Ultimately, the key to achieving a harmonious balance between functionality and elegance lies in meticulous planning and attention to detail. Luxury kitchens are not just about showcasing the latest trends or expensive materials but about creating a space that reflects the lifestyle and personality of the homeowner.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Eve Greendale

In conclusion, luxury kitchens are a marriage of form and function, where every element is carefully curated to deliver both practicality and refinement. By prioritizing functionality without compromising on elegance, homeowners can create a culinary oasis that not only inspires creativity but also exudes sophistication and style.

Integrating Interior Design With Architectural Elements

In Palm Beach, where luxury living meets coastal charm, creating a home that transcends mere function is an art form. Here at KRISTA + HOME, we believe the magic truly happens when interior design seamlessly integrates with architectural elements. These details – from shiplap walls to exposed beams – become the foundation upon which a space’s personality is built.  We love working with homeowners, architects and builders to make each home truly customized for our clients.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Venji Reyes.

The timeless elegance of shiplap wall treatments adds warmth and texture. We love using it in bedrooms for a cozy retreat feel, or in kitchens for a touch of rustic sophistication. Paint it a crisp white for a clean look, or embrace a deeper hue to create a dramatic statement.

Built-in shelving isn’t just functional; it’s an opportunity for creative expression. Showcase prized possessions behind glass doors, or create a library nook with custom-designed shelving that reflects your personal style.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Jessica Glynn.

Exposed beams add architectural intrigue and a sense of history to a space. In a modern setting, they offer a touch of rustic charm, while in a traditional home, they can be accentuated to enhance the existing style.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Jessica Glynn

The key to successful integration lies in understanding the relationship between these architectural elements and interior design. Consider how the materials used in your architectural details – wood tones, brick textures – can be echoed in furniture selections and finishes. This creates a sense of visual continuity and a unified aesthetic.

Architectural details should complement, not overwhelm, your interior design. For instance, balance a statement fireplace with a thoughtfully curated furniture arrangement that respects its scale.

At KRISTA + HOME, we understand the power of architectural details to elevate a space. We collaborate closely with architects and builders to ensure a cohesive design approach from the very beginning. Our team of experts will help you leverage these elements to create a home that is not only beautiful but also uniquely yours, a testament to the art of seamless integration.

The Great Debate: Buying New vs. Remodeling Your Existing Home

Are you at a crossroads, contemplating whether to embark on the adventure of purchasing a new home or investing in remodeling your existing abode? It’s a decision that many homeowners face, teetering between the allure of a fresh start and the sentimental attachment to their current dwelling. However, one of the most pressing considerations often revolves around affordability. Is it more affordable to buy a new home or remodel your existing one? Let’s explore both sides of the coin.

The Case for Buying New
1. Purchasing a new home typically involves a significant upfront investment, including down payments, closing costs, and potential moving expenses. However, these costs are often easier to predict and budget for compared to the uncertainties of a remodeling project.
2. New homes often come equipped with the latest features and amenities, such as energy-efficient appliances, smart home technology, and updated infrastructure. These features can translate into long-term savings on utility bills and maintenance costs.
3. Renovations can be disruptive and time-consuming, especially if you’re living in the home during the construction process. Opting for a new home means sidestepping the inconvenience of renovation disruptions and enjoying a move-in-ready space.

Interior design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Eve Greendale.

The Case for Remodeling Your Existing Home:
1. While remodeling costs can vary widely depending on the scope of the project, renovating your existing home can often be more cost-effective than purchasing a new one. By strategically updating key areas, you can enhance your home’s value without the expense of a new mortgage.
2. Your current home holds memories, history, and a sense of familiarity that can’t be replicated in a new space. Remodeling allows you to preserve the character and charm of your existing home while tailoring it to better suit your evolving needs and lifestyle.
3.  Renovating your home gives you the opportunity to tailor the design to your exact preferences and specifications. Whether it’s expanding your kitchen, adding a luxurious master suite, or creating a custom entertainment space, remodeling allows for unparalleled customization and personalization.

Interior design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Eve Greendale.

The Bottom Line:
Ultimately, the decision to buy new or remodel your existing home hinges on a variety of factors, including your budget, lifestyle, and long-term goals. While purchasing a new home offers the appeal of a fresh start and modern amenities, remodeling allows you to preserve the unique character of your existing home while tailoring it to better suit your needs.

Interior design by KRISTA + HOME. Photo by Eve Greendale.

Before making a decision, it’s essential to carefully weigh the costs, benefits, and potential challenges of each option. Consulting with a real estate agent and/or a reputable contractor can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision that aligns with your financial and personal objectives.

Whether you choose to embark on the exciting journey of purchasing a new home or embark on a transformative remodeling project, remember that the end goal is creating a space that brings joy, comfort, and fulfillment to you and your loved ones.

How to Best Work with an Architect for Your Dream Home

Palm Beach, with its legacy of architectural brilliance, beckons homeowners to create living spaces that seamlessly blend timeless elegance with modern functionality. When embarking on such an endeavor, collaboration is key. While an interior designer plays a crucial role in curating the aesthetic soul of your home, a skilled architect serves as the foundation upon which your vision takes shape.

How to establish a successful partnership:

  • Shared Vision: Begin by seeking an architect whose design philosophy aligns with your own. Explore their portfolio, paying close attention to projects that resonate with your personal style and desired functionality.
  • Open Communication: From the outset, foster open and consistent communication with your architect. Clearly articulate your needs, preferences, and budget, and be receptive to their expertise and insights.
  • Respectful Collaboration: Remember, your architect is your partner, not simply a service provider. Treat their expertise with respect, but also be prepared to advocate for your desires, finding a balance that fosters a collaborative and productive environment.

  • Unified Vision: Throughout the design process, we work hand-in-hand with the architect to ensure a cohesive aesthetic that transcends individual disciplines.

Do High End Interior Designers Know How To Value Engineer Materials and Selections?

The world of high-end interior design is often associated with extravagance, exclusivity, and an abundance of luxury materials. But does this equate to a disregard for budget consciousness? Contrary to popular belief, many high-end interior designers are masters of value engineering, skillfully balancing luxury with practicality and cost-effectiveness. This is something that our team at KRISTA + HOME prides itself on.

Interior Design by KRISTA + HOME, photo by Eve Greendale

Value engineering in interior design doesn’t mean compromising on quality or aesthetics. It’s about strategic decision-making to achieve the desired outcome while optimizing cost and resources. This involves:

  • Material Selection: High-end designers understand the nuances of materials. They can navigate alternatives that may have a similar visual impact but lower cost, like using veneer instead of solid wood, or opting for engineered stone countertops instead of natural marble.
  • Customization vs. Ready-Made: While bespoke furniture holds undeniable appeal, designers can recommend equally stunning ready-made pieces or suggest modifications to existing designs, achieving a custom look without the custom price tag.
  • Resourcefulness and Upcycling: Repurposing vintage finds, incorporating salvaged materials, or creatively using leftover materials can add character and uniqueness while saving on costs.
  • Long-Term Value: High-end designers prioritize investments that last. They choose durable materials, timeless designs, and versatile pieces that can adapt to changing needs, ultimately reducing the need for frequent replacements.

What is the difference between an interior designer and an interior architect?

Stepping into the world of home renovation or interior design, you might encounter two similar-sounding professionals: interior designers and interior architects. While both focus on creating beautiful and functional spaces, their skillsets and roles differ significantly. Understanding these differences can help you choose the right partner for your project.

An interior designer is like the artist of the space. They excel in aesthetics, color theory, and creating a cohesive visual style. They can help you curate furniture, textiles, artwork, and accessories to bring your dream vision to life. They also possess knowledge of space planning, furniture layout, and ergonomics to ensure a comfortable and functional arrangement.

Think of an interior architect as the engineer of the space. They have a strong understanding of architectural principles, building codes, and construction methods. They can tackle complex projects involving alterations to walls, ceilings, floors, and electrical systems. If you’re planning a major renovation or building an extension, an interior architect can ensure structural integrity and functionality.

Remember, both professionals offer valuable expertise, and the best choice depends on your project’s specific needs and scope. Consider your priorities, budget, and the complexity of the work to make an informed decision.

Bonus Tip: Many professionals fall under the umbrella of “interior design,” such as decorators and stylists. Do your research to understand their individual skillsets and ensure they align with your project requirements.

By understanding the distinctions between interior designers and interior architects, you can confidently choose the right partner to transform your space into a dream home.
