How To Add Greenery To Your Space
Adding plants to a space can enhance your decor and enliven a room. I just bought myself a fiddle fig tree today for my house. Plus a nice lush fern for a vintage plant stand I got for a steal. And some peace lilies for my entry (no direct light). Some of my favorite plants are cactus and succulents, but they need lots of light and are really only meant for outdoors or a very bright window.
Chinese evergreen or English ivy re-planted in vintage urns are on the side tables in this picture. These are some of the best air filtering plants you can buy. Plus they are lush and pretty.
I also love large jars with greens that I cut from my yard. They look natural and sculptural – plus they’re free!
Topiaries are super rad but high maintenance. They need to be trimmed regularly to keep their shape. I opt for the rounded ball-like shapes because I love anything circular. It feels organic.
Add as much green as you can to your home. It makes you feel more connected to the earth and nature. Stay tuned for my new post on planting a garden with your kids.
Happy plant hunting!

How To Create A Magazine-Worthy Dining Room For Less
As an interior designer, I shop wholesale and many of my clients in Palm Beach county love furniture brands I use like Donghia, Holly Hunt and Ferrell Mittman. These brands are pretty pricey, but we’re lucky to have so many great and affordable furniture stores at our fingertips. A few of my favorites are West Elm, CB2 and William Sonoma Home.
I thought it would be fun to re-create one of the rooms I designed with similar yet affordable products that can easily be found online.
This dining room was featured in Luxe Interiors + Design Magazine and it’s easy as ever to recreate it for your own home. The beauty of this room is in it’s simplicity. I put some white tongue and groove on the back wall, had an artist paint the large “Blue Horizon” panels for me, chairs are upholstered in handpicked Ikat fabric, and the chandelier costs more than my mortgage payment. But fear not! This can be recreated for a fraction of the price.

Top 5 Ways To Manage Clutter In Your Home
One of the things that makes hotel rooms so appealing is that there is no clutter. Clutter in your home can be stressful, and I find that when I de-clutter my space it also helps to de-clutter my mind. After all, your outer life reflects your inner world so take a look around to see exactly how you’re feeling! A few strategies have worked for me to make my own home clutter-free, and I try to think about this in my designs as well.
- Make Your Bed: Every Day! You will find that making the bed up in each room in your home is a perfect beginning to a new de-clutter mindset. Baby steps! And it’s a great lesson for kids. Like a hotel I use a few decorative pillows and a separate blanket for the foot of the bed – I like a duvet because it looks so cozy. The rest of the bedding is functional and useful. It’s easy to just pull up your blanket, put on your regularly used pillows and then cover with decorative pillows topped off with a pretty blanket at the foot of the bed.
2. Functional Furniture. Think multi-functional when purchasing your furniture. Wall units with cabinetry, storage ottomans and trunks are a few awesome ideas. This playroom-slash-guest bedroom has a decorative murphy-bed and I backed the wall unit with a contrasting wall paper which is fun yet sophisticated. Also you can see a hidden pull out desk in the corner for use only when the computer is in need otherwise it’s tucked away. Scale is super important. Don’t buy too big or too small, there should be plenty of wiggle room but no large gaps around furniture.
3. Clean Surfaces. I am not a big fan of having stuff out on counters or trays..like your remote and phone. Those items should be placed in an organized drawer. When designing a kitchen, think function and how appliances could be stored instead of left out. I love the storage that two islands provides. A small upper glass front cabinet can showcase some fun decorative items, otherwise items left out should be functional and pretty.
4. Hide technology. Put TVs and computers hidden in a piece of furniture that can be closed, especially in your bedroom. Get bedside tables that have drawers so you can put your phone away at night. If you have a small bedroom, the number one priority is functionality. Each piece of furniture should provide a service, and the most important one is to keep necessary items out of sight (and out of mind! There is a theme here!) Hide your phone bedside in a faux storage book, it’s important to avoid blinking lights and ding-dings throughout the night.
5. Hide electrical cords. For flat screen TVs, have an electrician hide them in the wall, or put cord covers on the wall and have them painted the same color as the walls. For lamps that are in the center of the room, either use battery LED powered lamps, or get flat extension cords and hide under the rug. If you are getting new flooring for your renovations, have outlets installed on the floor or other hidden spots. In one of the recent kitchens I designed, we hid the electrical outlets in drawers and under the cabinets.

How To Add Spring Decor To Your Home
It has been a long winter, especially for my friends up North, but Spring is right around the corner! Spring is a great time to entertain, and with the Easter and Passover holidays coming up, many people are looking for quick easy ways to spruce up their homes. Here are great ways to refresh your home decor and add touches that will get you excited for the warmer weather.
Swap out your throw pillows. Throw pillows can add a great pop of color and completely transform a space. I keep different pillows stored for different seasons and swap them out accordingly.
Change your wall decor. Try swapping out your wall decor for a completely different look. I recently changed one of the paintings in my dining room. Or just keep the walls clean and uncluttered.
Try some new accessories. Silk flower arrangements, large candles and some favorite books on display and accessible.
Change your light fixture or lamps. I love crystal – it gives me a sense of clarity. And that’s what Spring represents – a clearing of all the chaos before.
A coat of paint. White, bright, and light.
Bedding or Drapery. Florals or paisley are great for a completely new look on the windows. And white bedding or a white fluffy throw will make everyone feel cozy and fresh.
This bedroom is filled with some untouchable brands. Get the Vibe below with a more affordable touch!

How To Choose The Right Size Area Rug For Your Room
One questi0n that I often get from friends and clients is how to choose the right area rug for your home. The right rug is so important. Many homes today are built with a very open concept where one room flows into the next without the delineation of a wall, so the area rug warms and defines a space.
I love oversized area rugs. I want all my furniture on the rug with room to breathe around the parameter. That’s just me. It’s not necessary but it looks great and gives the room finite definition. We live in Florida so homes tend to have lots of tile combined with lots of air conditioning. Floors can be cold to the touch. So for me, bigger is better. Area rugs can be in the middle of a seating area but the rug edges should touch the front of the furniture end to end, or the front legs of the pieces should be on the rug.
In a bedroom, there are a few options. I love an area rug that goes under the bed and gives at least four feet of rug on either side of the bed so you step off onto warmth. At the foot of the bed there should be a bit more rug than on the sides. Also, in a bedroom, there is an option to do one large area rug at the foot of the bed only. But the rug shouldn’t be half on and half off ie. Falling in the middle of the bed itself.
Rugs that are too small look like bath mats. So be sure you are using a rug that covers enough space in a room. Area rugs in dining rooms or under dining tables are controversial in my book. I don’t love them because food falls, they get dirty, it’s hard to move a chair back and forth. However, a flat weave or kilim rug are great options. Chairs must be able to pull out all the way and still be on the rug. Dining chairs cannot be half off and half on a rug.
As far as bathrooms go, if you have in floor heating I’m jealous! If not, large and fluffy rugs are a must – flokati even better!. They should be cleaned weekly and swapped out every other month. Rubber backing is a great idea for no slipping.
If you’re going to layer rugs, be careful. Flatweave, natural fiber and animal skin rugs are the only ones that work whenlayering. I do love the Moroccan feel of a few rugs thrown together. It’s very “in the moment”.
Mats belong in front of your home and should be a large statement piece. Your entryway should have at least a 4×6 to make it feel like a special space and set the tone for the rest of the house. Color or bold pattern are a wonderful idea.
Here are some great rugs that I love, and super crushing on blue of any kind at the moment. It’s the most inviting neutral of all, and when it’s bright and royal, it puts a smile on my face.
How I designed my home to work for me is with rugs in neutral tones and if I’m going to make a bold statement with color or geometric pattern, I normally don’t do that with a rug. Unless it is tone on tone or an subtle geo. Otherwise it overwhelms the space and the attention is on the rug. Balance is key here! Natural weaves and colors are the best, anything that looks handmade or is soft to the touch is my favorite. If furniture is light and neutral, go with a subtle color rug (I am loving blues right now!), but if furniture is colorful or dark use a neutral toned rug.
I decided it was important to stay within a tight budget when I designed my home three years ago in 2013. We are about to undergo a fun facelift, also budget friendly so stay tuned for that!

Palm Beach Vendor Profile: Mecox
I LOVE the Antique Row section of West Palm Beach, and one of my favorite shops is Mecox Floral Emporium. In NYC Mecox was my go to place to top off the styling of my clients’ home – accessories, florals, and awesome case goods. I was so thrilled to find out that they have a location right here in Palm Beach county: WOOT!
Recently I browsed the shop to price out some fig trees for my own house and, I can choose from faux and the real deal. The show room is huge and I’m inspired by every inch of the outdoor and indoor displays. The outside section of Mecox is a little slice of paradise.
It is a superstore of fabulousness (is that a word?) I bought a Slim Aarons photo at Mecox for my own house. It’s a true conversation piece. People love interesting and unique elements. I love anything that strikes up a conversation. So let the beauty of Mecox reign! The colors, patterns, textures – all of it – is just what this girl needs to put a smile on her face.
About Last Night: Food Truck Love
I recently completed shooting (my sixth consecutive season!) of The Vanilla Ice Project for DIY network. Rob Van Winkle (aka Vanilla Ice) always hosts a wrap party/open house at the end of the shoot. He opens up the home that we renovated to family and friends for a fun evening of home tours, music and food.
One of my favorite things about the event was the food…they had a food truck! Offerings included fish tacos, crabcake sliders and delectable grilled cheese…yum.
Food trucks are now all the rage even for weddings! I love the idea of having a food truck at an event to do the catering. It is fun, easy and no kitchen clean-up required at the end of the night! I recently hired a food truck for a Halloween party I had at my home. That truck fed our entire neighborhood, and some came back for thirds! It was uber fun.
Be sure to watch The Vanilla Ice Project on DIY Network, airing this summer! You might see a shot of my girlfriends and I eating food truck tacos in our limo. And check our latest post about the show behind the scenes, coming soon!
Bring Color To Your Outdoor Space
Color in your outdoor space is a great way to entice your guests and family to spend more time outside. Bright colors and crisp white, mixed with rustic elements create an inviting outdoor domain.
We recently visited Eau Palm Beach in Manalapan, Florida for a relaxing getaway. One my favorite designers, Jonathan Adler, put his spin on the hotel and made some great choices in the outdoor areas. It’s fabulous!
Mixing orange and turquoise, stripes with geometrics and bright yellow with live edge tables is not for the faint at heart. Such a fun canvas for an inspiring lanai, backyard, porch or outdoor oasis.
Here are a few tips for how add color to your outdoor space.
- Pillows. Lots of throw pillows on your outdoor furniture adds a great pop of color.
- Tile. There are so many great lines of fun tile available for outdoor design.
- Planters. Use a brightly colored planters to frame your space.
- Cabana. Purchase a brightly striped awning to create a luxury poolside cabana, you will feel like you are at a resort!
Our visit to the hotel has inspired me to add more color to my outdoor designs. Stay tuned to see some of the homes I am finishing up.

How To Create A Vintage Look For Your Home
Vintage is defined as too old to be considered modern, but not old enough to be considered antique. It can also mean retro, recently out of style with potential to make a comeback. It is such fun to scour antique flea markets, thrift shops and vintage shops to hunt for pieces to use in my design. The look has been called Boho Chic or a modern take on bohemian lifestyle. What you may also call today’s hippy! It’s a mix of contemporary items and found pieces to create an “in the moment” or spontaneous style of design. Something that is not too planned but just comes together effortlessly.
Recently I visited Urban Vintage Rentals here in Jupiter, Florida. They are a creative cast of women who style rooms for events and photographs. I will be working with them on two of my upcoming photo shoots and wanted to get a look at their wares. Perusing their warehouse gave me lots of ideas and we discussed our exciting collaboration about to happen.
A perfectly vintage style might include brightly painted classic furnishings, cobalt and emerald glassware, dreamcatchers, brass candlesticks, bright velvet club chairs, various patterned throw pillows, and a traditional element here and there like an old wood Windsor chair.
Many furniture retailers are also starting to duplicate the style, making these types of pieces easy to find. Etsy is also a great place to find vintage. Here are a few pieces I found to give you some ideas.
Eighty By Krista Tile Now Available For Purchase
I am so excited to have launched my own line of designer tile called “Eighty by Krista” in collaboration with NYC’s TileBar. Inspired by the wild and whimsical pop-culture shapes of the 1980’s, Eighty by Krista is an homage to the legendary decade that propelled interior design, music and fashion into uncharted territories.
Composed in classic Carrara and Bardiglio marble, Eighty by Krista takes the art of waterjet to new heights with this intricately crafted pattern that caters to a wide range of clientele, from the younger risk-taking designer to the more mature discerning homeowner.
I had so much fun designing the line and can’t wait to see the tile in action. If you purchase the tile and use it in a room, send me pics. I would love to see the results! Which design is your favorite?

DecorPorn: Porcelain Objects
Let’s face it, the right accessories can make or break a room. I love to accessorize and sometimes one piece can inspire an entire design. This is the kind of stuff that looks amazing on a shelf or a tabletop.
Photo by Lesley Unruh. Design by Krista Watterworth Alterman.
Sourcing: Chess Bookends, Round mirror, Boat Tray, Leaf Bowl, Blue & White Ginger Jar, White Coral, Blue Glass Vase
Currently, I am obsessed with these porcelain objects by Anna Kasabian. They are truly works of art. I love the fluidity and purity of these pieces. Anna’s work is one of a kind. I love that her pieces resemble delicate blooms, ocean waves and perfect seashells.
Arteriors also has cool bowls that add a little bling to the palette. These Vanessa bowls are beautiful.
Fornesetti plates are an interesting display item. Just one hanging on a wall is enough to start a conversation. I am loving the Eva Collection right now.
About Last Night: Swank Farms
Last night we went to a very special event hosted by Swank Specialty Produce. A group of local and nationally known chefs presented dinner in an exquisite, rustic el fresco setting at Swank Farms (named after Jodi Swank, who owns the farm) in in Loxahatchee, Florida.
We got a chance to tour the hydrophonic growing houses and we sampled some truly amazing culinary bites and organic wines.
The lineup of chefs was amazing and included Aaron Brooks, Executive Chef of Edge Steak & Bar in Miami, Adonay Tafur, Executive Chef of The Dutch in Miami Beach, Alex Chang, Executive Chef of Vagabond Restaurant & Bar in Miami, Max Santiago, Executive Pastry Chef/Partner of The Salty Donut in Miami and Melanie Robertson-Ober, Sommelier of Cordon Bleu Catering in West Palm Beach.
The theme of the evening was “Chinese New Year” and we celebrated the Year of the Monkey in the best possible way…with great food, lots of vino and great friends!
