The Acapulco Chair
The Acapulco Chair has a laid-back sophistication and is super comfortable. This iconic chair is making a comeback…it first began popular in the 1950’s. There is an old legend that says it was created by a french traveller who used a woven hammock design to create an open-air chair that would capture the ocean breezes in Acapulco.
The style of this chair is definitely bohemian, which is currently trending.
Outdoor furniture can be very pricey, so this is a great option for those on a budget.
The chair has inspired dozens of other pieces like this chic outdoor loveseat.

10 Ways To Keep Your Home Organized
So, we are in the final stretch of summer (sigh) and this is the time of year that I start thinking about how I can stay organized for the school year. Juggling the things that kids need for school, sports and activities can be a challenge. Here are some of my best tips and strategies to keep things in order.
- Purge. I have heard two rules that stick with me…one is that if something new comes into your home, something should go out. I can’t say I adhere to this 100%, but I try! The other rule is that every month you could find 3-5 things in each room to throw away or donate. Try it, you might surprise yourself!
- Backpack/family command station. Even if you don’t have a fabulous mudroom, you can still create an organized area for the kids to put their shoes, backpacks, etc.

- 15 minutes. Commit to 15 minutes a day and set an alarm on your phone. Each day spend 15 minutes on something…the junk drawer, the medicine cabinet, kid’s drawers, etc.
- Dry Erase board. In our home, I use a weekly dry erase board and outline the big events for the week. Kids like to know whats coming up..and it even helps my husand to know which night I am going out with my girlfriends, when the kids have soccer practice, birthday parties, etc.

- Homework caddy. Keep a little bin filled with sharpened pencils, erasers, crayons, glue sticks and a ruler. Keep it in a central location and pull it out at homework time. Trays are a great way to organize items on a coffee or side table (remotes, magazines, coasters, etc.)
- Hooks instead of shelves. Carefully placed hooks in your bathroom, closet and kid’s rooms can make all the difference.
- Labeling. It’s great to label items so you can easily find things. There are tons of options, like the cute chalkboard labels below or you can use a labelmaker. There are also tons of cute and free printable labels on Pinterest.

- Donate Regularly. Put a big plastic bin in each closet marked “donations”. Go through the closets regularly to find items that don’t fit or are not worn. When the bin is full, its off to Goodwill.
- One Year Rule. Go through your closet each quarter and be strict about what you get rid of. If it is not something you have worn in a year, out it goes!
- Tabletops Clear. Feng Shui rules say it is important to clear table tops on a regular basis. I agree! When we come home we tend to throw our keys, purse, etc. onto the closest table top and things accumulate quickly. Try to keep your table tops tidy and clear them periodically throughout the day.
An organized home will make your life feel more harmonious in all areas, it really works!
Building A Brand
As the owner of an interior design firm, one of my biggest goals has always been creating a strong brand. The brand of a company is it’s true personality. To define the brand there are many questions that need to be answered. Who is the audience that you are trying to reach? What is the style of the company? How do you speak to your audience and how does it match up with the products or services you provide? It’s important to get specific and build something that will resonate with people and become recognizable.
My company, Krista Watterworth Design Studio, has recently undergone a rebranding, and I am really happy with the results. It’s important that the new brand elements we developed carry through in everything, from the website to the social media to the materials we provide to our clients and the press. We developed brand boards as a guide. It was really a helpful exercise that I recommend to anyone with a business. Your board should include the logo, preferred fonts, colors and photography or iconic symbols that represent the brand.
Our team developed these brand boards to guide us through everything we do marketing-wise.
I created one brand board for my design firm, and a separate design board for my blog, Design Palm Beach. They have different personalities, but work together.
In addition, my awesome team and I just had a fun photo shoot. I wanted the photos to really reflect the spirit of our brand and the personalities of my team members. I think we were really able to achieve what I wanted!

I am the Creative Director of the firm and am surrounded by my amazing team! Bernadine Rowlands (Business Manager), Jennifer Ruyack (Marketing Director), Pam Hassler (Interior Design Director) and Sarah Eisenberg (Interior Design Assistant).
Create An Upscale Hotel Living Room in Your Home
Recently my family took a somewhat relaxing (two youngsters in tow) staycation to one of our favorite local hotels, The Breakers on Palm Beach. It occurred to me while we were there that if I wanted to create the vibe of one of the most lavishly decorated hotels in the area, I could do that — for less! Why not? When a girl sets her mind to a Luis Vuitton on a Target budget… she will find a way (if she’s determined enough).
We stayed at the Flagler Club which is a hotel within the hotel at The Breakers. It’s all very confusing, but Florida residents can stay at local hotels at a discount during the off season. And voila! We had butler service on a budget. One of the main rooms in the Flagler was decorated in a chic and transitional style. It was the base camp for most of our activities since there was regular food and drinks available (as well as TVs, plug-ins for iPads and comfortable seating).
If you are inspired by this room like I was, here is how you can create an upscale hotel living room in your own home!

Place Settings You Will Love
So we’ve done a little traveling this summer, as a family. It’s a dizzying whirlwind of water slides, animated movies, meeting princesses, Jedi academy, chicken nuggets and french fries. My husband and I love our babies, and kid oriented vacations are essential. But finding balance (and vodka) are key to our survival. Wherever we go, I am on a mission to locate delicious food. Then mommy and daddy have their few minutes of joy. Until the next roller coaster ride or plane vomit. Yay!
What I noticed most about these delicious culinary treats were the equally beautiful place settings. Here is how to create a beautiful package: food and style – to incorporate into your next home party. Also find some great recipes to follow!
Bohemian Chic Place Setting
I went to a very special private wine dinner with Howard Freedland of Bulletproof Wines and had a delicious meal with some awesome wine pairings. One of my favorites was a delicious starter that was wonderfuly with the Seven Hills wines he provided. Here is a similar recipe:

We recently went to Cafe Martinique, Jean-Georges restaurant in Atlantis Bahamas. Needless to say, it was scrumptious experience. Some of my favorite and most decedent dining. Some items that are hard to make at home but here are a few recipes that will get you where you need to be.

Light Fixtures That Can Transform A Room
The right light fixture is so crucial to the decor in a room. I think of light fixtures as works of art. When choosing fixtures for my designs, I think about balance in the room, as well as what type of lighting the space requires. Will the fixture be providing accent lighting, ambiance lighting, or will it primarily be decorative? I also think about the entire home and choose accordingly. The light fixtures throughout do not need to match, but there needs to be some relationship…similar shapes or finishes.
Here are a few examples of light fixtures that could certainly transform a space:

5 Dining Rooms, 5 Styles
Some people say the kitchen is the heart of the home, but the dining room should get some love, too. We use ours for family dinners, dinner parties and even casual gatherings with friends and extended family. I have so many great memories of people I love gathered around our dining room table. It used to be that the dining room was a room that was rarely used, maybe just once or twice a year for Thanksgiving. Now, thanks to open floor plans, dining rooms are often used daily. The key to dining room decor is to think practical and comfortable, not stuffy and overly formal. Below are five of my favorite dining room designs.
Sometimes it is hard to find the right piece of art for a large wall in a dining room. In the photos below, I enlisted the help of a local artist to create custom artwork for the room.
Design Inspiration: I Heart NYC
My hubby and I recently took a quick trip to NYC and there was inspiration everywhere. I adore the energy of the city, there is nothing that compares. Inspiration is everywhere…in the architecture, the street fashion, you name it!
Important to get back there whenever I can. We went to Shakespeare in the Park, which is an annual tradition and also to the fabulous Marea…but the best part was just walking around, taking it all in.
One of the most beautiful features of the older residences in Manhattan are the stamped concrete. The way they utilized a mundane and basic material to create a facade that is magical. It is a wonderfully creative trick. We often stamp design elements into concrete patios and decks in Florida.
When we first arrived we celebrated with this beautiful fruit and cheese platter (and of course champers). It was a perfect way to kick off our weekend away. My husband and I met in NYC and lived there for over ten years. So it’s always a romantic place for us. I love to entertain at home and the simplicity of a bamboo tray with cheeses and dried fruit is always a crowd favorite.
Nothing better than a visit to Lincoln Center! We dined at a restaurant called Lincoln and it was absolutely fabulous. Then we went to see Jazz on Lincoln Center and it was transformative. The Ali Jackson Trio – wow – I was blown away at the immense talent. He plays with Wynton Marsalis around the world. This is what I miss about Manhattan. The modern furnishings from inside are carried outside seamlessly.
The view from our hotel room was beautiful, and the weather couldn’t be better. The glitter and glass of all the tall buildings with the angular architecture is the essence of American modern style. I heart NYC because it’s one of the most amazing cities in the US. It will always be in my heart and I’ll always find inspiration there!
Modern Mud Rooms I Adore
Anyone who has kids knows how crazy it can be getting them organized for school or camp…backpacks, shoes, socks, notebooks, you name it. As a mom I fantasize about the perfect mud room and I’m sure I am not alone. So, what exactly is a mudroom? A mudroom is defined as a small room or entryway where footwear and outerwear can be removed before entering a house. Ideally, it would have shelves or cubbies for member of the household (or at least the kids!)
I have designed a few of these and the room can still reflect the style of your home…it can be modern and functional. Everything can be customizable to your needs. I love seeing the reactions of the moms when these rooms are completed! It’s sad, but sometimes the mudroom is a favorite. Thinking of doing one in your home?
You can revamp your laundry room, garage or even a small nook near one of your entry ways. I am about to make a powder bath smaller so I can create a modern mudroom that I adore in my own home. Even in Florida we need a staging area for all our daily stuff. Stay tuned while I post images of my own renovation.

Before & After: Country Club Mod
I recently finished up this home in the country club community of Frenchman’s Creek in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. When I first saw the Mediterranean style home it was a cacophony of overblown and exaggerated attempts at old world Italian style. The walls were covered with faux paint treatments, large scaled formal furniture and massive crystal chandeliers.
The homeowners felt that this design approach did not feel authentic and I definitely agreed. I loved the chance to show that just because a home may have Mediterranean architecture, you do not need to go in that direction with the interior design. The couple splits their time between Monaco and Florida, and have modern, clean and European sensibilities. They wanted a space that was simple, clean and functional. Since they love to entertain, I wanted to give them something that was chic yet informal to reflect the coastal location.
The result of the modern design is a home that is a fresh, contemporary take on country club living.

I Heart the New Kate Spade Fabric & Home
I recently attended an event at Kravet to check out some of their new lines. Kravet Inc., established in 1918, is the industry leader in to the trade home furnishings. This fifth generation family business distributes fabrics, furniture, wall coverings, trimmings, carpets and accessories. I love that the family is still running the biz. It gives me a cozy, warm feeling.
Kate Spade just released a new line of fabric, and it is pretty amazing. Inspired by some of the company’s iconic patterns and colors, Curiosities by kate spade new york for Kravet presents exciting and playfully sophisticated designs that encourage personal style with a dash of whimsical charm.
It is buttoned-up yet playful… just like her fashion. Preppy yet fun. The colors are saturated and the patterns are bold. It’s a pretty cool collection. Below are a collection of Kate’s home and fabric favs.

How to Use Red, White & Blue in your Home
Using red, white and blue in a room can be tricky. It’s all about balance. With this room, just a few pops of red was all that was needed to create that wow factor. The important key to all good design is the repetition of certain elements set evenly throughout the space. It’s also about using the right blues, reds and whites. Mix some navy with cobalt and wine with cherry red. The more crisp and clean, the happier. Pepper in some light gray and you’ve got a cheerful yet sophisticated space.
Of course using it in a kids’ space is pretty elementary… so you think! This is a playroom I did with a nautical theme. I didn’t want to use too much red because it would overpower the space. Touches here and there are subtle but existent. I went a little nautical… nothing wrong with that. This home is on the water and these homeowners are boat owners.

How To Create An Inviting Guest Room
Guests are always fun at first thought. We often can’t wait for them to arrive. Then the days of schedule disruption, picky eaters, and entertaining to no avail – I’m just being real here – can get old fast. But, the preparation is only fun. I am in the midst of designing a guest room in my house that feels like a high end hotel. Mostly because when my husband snores (which is almost every night) I have an escape. It’s truly selfish but the intention is good — guests should feel welcome and at home. Mi casa es su casa! Here are some tips for creating an inviting guest room.
Pillows, pillows, pillows: One of the things I love about traveling is interesting bedding. I love to feel and experience new fabrics and patterns. I also love when I see fabrics that I’ve used in my own designs. That is a super design validation for me. I was recently at the Orlando Four Seasons and they used the Fortuny fabrics I used in this home. I was so excited and felt right at home. So load up on cool throw pillows… layer, layer, layer!
Baby Light My Fire: I think a fireplace adds a certain type of warmth and sex appeal to any room, especially a bedroom. Most people don’t have a fireplace in a bedroom at home, so doing a fireplace like this EcoSmart bioethanol (no vent needed) fireplace is a very cool idea.
Wallpaper is Where It’s At: Below I used a textured shagreen wallpaper that is easy on the eyes yet subtly dimensional.
Fun Objects: Use accessories and artwork that you may not otherwise use in other rooms. Be a little more daring. Remember this is a retreat and people should feel like they are in a cool, interesting “home away from home”.
Overall a guest room should be eclectic – a departure from everyday life. Think about what you want when you’re traveling. I like to see things I don’t normally see. I like to be inspired. I definitely like to be comfortable. But I want to walk into a room and say ‘wow’ out loud.
Sit + Stew : A collection of chairs I am obsessed with
Ahhh… to relax and read a book, or just put up your feet, maybe even curl up with a blanket and nap. Wait, whose world is that? I have a business, a husband and two kids! Seriously, it’s good for our health to take a time out. Sit and stew, as they say. Here is a favorite chair of mine in my master bedroom. It’s a destructed silk tufted gem. I love it! I pull up a foot stool and a cashmere throw, and I’ve got a spot of my own. Below are some tips and chairs I love!
Many chairs make sense but some are better than others. For a few reasons. Leather can be cold unless it’s nice and worn in. It’s also durable and easy to clean, looks better with age. Velvet is cozy but can be slippery if it’s mostly polyester not cotton. Linen is my favorite. It looks natural and it feels good on the skin, plus it’s timeless. An ottoman can make sense because where else do you put your feet? A recliner…um… yes please! It’s an all-in-one, how can you go wrong. Just make sure it’s a beautiful one. I love a swivel chair because it gives me options.

Our Vow Renewal: Blush + Gold
Ten years, two kids, one hell of a party! My hubby and I decided to renew our vows. After ten years of marriage and weathering one storm after another, we both felt compelled to include our babies in this very special celebration. I want a boho-chic style weekend, with a little glitter on the side:) These sequin table clothes are fab and I recently used them in my VIP Tent at a fundraiser for Palm Beach Historical Society.

Flowers will be natural and vibrant. I love peonies and my husband calls me his “Sweet Pea” so there will be some of those. In my wedding bouquet I had rosemary because I love fresh herbs, and also I’m a thespian at heart. In Hamlet, Ophelia says rosemary is for remembrance, “pray, love, remember”. And lavender is my most favorite scent of all. So let’s have some of that too! (This arrangement includes Juliette David Austin Garden roses surrounded by Dusty Miller, feathery dark Agonis leaves, Celosia Specata, Black Scabbiossa blossoms with their pods, Astilbe, Fuschias and Seeded Eucalyptus with foliage.)

Our wedding champagne was Laurent Perrier Rose, so it works perfectly with the theme. Add a little glitter sugar and we’re all good.
Instead of a sit down dinner we are doing a living room style lounge with great music and dinner-by-the-bite. The ceremony itself will be an intimate one on the beach with our family only.
My Pinterest board is blowin’ up! Check it out, it’s called “We Still Do”. These are some of my biggest inspiration images – elements that are homey to me and my hubby, they feel warm, sexy and inviting. No traditional cake, just some fun treats like glitter donuts!
